Three people were killed overnight in wildfires that ravaged southern Greece and destroyed dozens of homes.

The massive fires, near the southern town of Aegio, also razed homes in at least eight villages, and closed a road connecting Athens to the major western port of Patras for several hours.

Rescue helicopters were called in to airlift stranded residents to safety.

Ten people, including five firefighters, have died in Greece this year in fires that have been spurred by successive heatwaves across south-east Europe in June and July.

Fires also raged today in northern Greece and the western holiday island of Cephallonia.
