MacKinnon backs Canero's judgment

Kilmarnock general manager Dave MacKinnon insists the club will respect whatever decision Peter Canero makes over his future despite the “very generous” new offer at Rugby Park.

Kilmarnock general manager Dave MacKinnon insists the club will respect whatever decision Peter Canero makes over his future despite the “very generous” new offer at Rugby Park.

The Scotland Under-21 international has been offered a 60% pay rise in a new three-year contract, which will keep him at the club until the summer of 2007.

Canero, 22, is currently mulling over the new deal with agent, Raymond Sparkes.

Mackinnon said: “Hopefully, we will hear something over the next couple of weeks.

“All the club can do is make an offer and then it is entirely up to the player but we will respect whatever decision Peter makes.

“It is up to him whether he decides to take up the offer or not.

“We have not given him a deadline to decide. We are speaking to Peter and his agent on a regular basis.

“We have given him a written offer for a three-year extension to 2007 and, given the current circumstances at the club and in Scottish football, it is a very generous offer.

“We would like to have him as a player for the future but we will respect whatever decision he makes.”
