Low paid must receive wage increases: Mandate

The Mandate trade union says it will be impossible to reach agreement in the current round of pay talks unless the issue of low-paid workers is addressed.

The Mandate trade union says it will be impossible to reach agreement in the current round of pay talks unless the issue of low-paid workers is addressed.

The union, which represents 44,000 workers in the wholesale and retail sector, says substantial flat-rate pay increases for this group will be necessary.

It has published a document today showing that these workers are the lowest paid in the country, taking home less than 22,000-a-year.

Mandate says calls for wage restraint are unjustified as two of the major retail companies in Ireland recently announced profits of up to 2bn.
