Arab states have rejected a South African proposal aimed at breaking the deadlock over the final declaration to be made at the UN conference on racism in Durban.

The EU and France have threatened to walk out of the conference unless statements equating Zionism with racism are removed from the text of the declaration.

Arab countries had wanted the international community to condemn Israel’s treatment of the Palestinian population as apartheid.
