HSE 'told to divert funds from nursing home scheme'

The Government has reportedly instructed the HSE to divert millions of euro set aside for a new nursing home funding scheme into other areas of health spending.

The Government has reportedly instructed the HSE to divert millions of euro set aside for a new nursing home funding scheme into other areas of health spending.

Reports this morning say the decision follows a series of problems that have stalled progress on the so-called "fair deal" scheme being introduced to replace the subvention scheme for nursing home care.

A total of €110m had been set aside for the new initiative, which aims to levy charges on the estates of nursing home residents after their deaths.

This morning's reports say the HSE has now been instructed to spend some of this money on contracting private nursing home beds for public use.
