Hundreds of people have gathered at Newgrange in Co Meath to mark the shortest day of the year.

It's a cloudy morning so far at the ancient passage tomb, which means the sun may not shine down the chamber of the 5,000-year-old monument.

The sun is expected to rise around 9am.
