A report on how children react when their parents are jailed has recommended the introduction of a code of practice to support the families of prison inmates.

The report by the Centre for Social and Educational Research expressed concern about the level of child poverty among the children of prisoners and the stigma attached to having a parent imprisoned.

As well as recommending a code of practice, it also said the children of prisoners should be given special attention under the National Anti-Poverty Strategy and that support groups and counselling services should be available to these children through their schools.

It also called for the removal of barriers separating inmates and visitors at Ireland’s prisons.
