Weather ruins early play in Gleneagles

The start of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles was delayed for two hours and 40 minutes by fog.

But it was not worth the wait for Scottish amateur James White. The 23-year-old, who missed the cut in the event last year, kicked off with a triple bogey seven.

The early leader was England’s European Tour rookie Matthew Nixon, who birdied the first two holes to be one in front of Dane Thomas Norret, Ireland’s Peter Lawrie and Australian Wade Ormsby.

After some early promising results 22-year-old Nixon, from Manchester, had missed 10 of the last 11 halfway cuts and lies only 160th on the money list. The top 115 keep their cards at the end of the season, the rest face a return to the qualifying school.

Ryder Cup pair Ross Fisher and Francesco Molinari were among the other early starters, but Fisher kicked off with a bogey four on the short 10th.

Colin Montgomerie and Jose Maria Olazabal, Ryder Cup captains past and present, were not out until the late afternoon following the delay.
