Ahern's comments under attack

Opposition parties are calling on the Government to apologise for describing people opposed to the Nice Treaty as whingers and scaremongers.

The Taoiseach, Bertie Ahern, made the controversial comments while attending the EU Summit at Seville yesterday and has been criticised by leaders of the Green Party and the Labour Party as well as members of Sinn Fein and the Socialist Party.

Labour leader, Ruairi Quinn said that the remarks were inappropriate and insulting while the leader of the Green Party, which has already announced it will campaign for a ‘no’ vote, says that they were arrogant and dismissive.

Trevor Sargent said such comments have no place in a proper debate on the Treaty and he pointed out that 54% of the Irish people had voted against it the last time around and that these were the people the Taoiseach was criticising.
