Cowen says ‘yes’ vote will not affect neutrality

Foreign Affairs Minister, Brian Cowen, has told the Dail that a 'yes' vote in the re-run of the Nice Treaty referendum will not affect Ireland's military neutrality.

Foreign Affairs Minister Brian Cowen has told the Dail that a "yes" vote in the re-run of the Nice Treaty referendum will not affect Ireland's military neutrality.

Speaking at the beginning of a debate on the treaty, Mr Cowen, claimed the Government has proven that Nice does not affect neutrality.

He said people who hesitated to vote "yes" last year because of fears about European militarisation can now support the treaty in confidence.
