The funeral has taken place of father-of-two Brian Fitzgerald, who was shot dead outside his Limerick home last Friday.

Family friends at his funeral said the 34-year-old Limerick man had done his best to protect young people but had been the person who paid the price for it.

It's believed Mr Fitzgerald made a statement to gardai about threats he had received from gangs.

It's thought gardai are pursuing an investigation along the lines that he shut out drugs from a local nightclub in Limerick and was murdered as revenge.

Mr Fitzgerald, at the time of his death, was a security man at a nightclub and bar in Limerick.
