Canine fans will love the new star of Coronation Street - a gold and white shih-tzu called Mr Woo.

The latest resident on the cobbled street will join the soap in October, when he becomes Rita Sullivan's companion.

Three-year-old Mr Woo, real name Teddy, was chosen from more than 30 hopefuls for a role in the show.

Canine casting director Kevin Horkin said he was perfect for the part.

He said: "It was vital that we found the right dog with the right temperament for the show and Teddy had that extra something that made him shine out from the rest.

"He'll be working with some of Coronation Street's top stars."

But trouble is ahead for Norris Cole, who helps Emily Bishop look after the pet while Rita is on holiday.

Norris is not a dog lover, and living with Mr Woo creates a battle of wills.
