The Government has appointed a former secretary general of the Department of the Environment as an interim regulator for the taxi industry, more than two years after the deregulation of the sector.

Jim Farrelly will be tasked with setting the standards required of people seeking taxi licences, as well as deciding the number of taxis which would be suitable for different towns and cities.

Transport Minister Seamus Brennan said Mr Farrelly will also examine the setting of taxi fares.

A full-time regulator with statutory powers is due to be appointed later this year.
