First Division runaway leaders Fulham have released a statement to clarify details of Chris Coleman's accident and confirmed the defender will miss the rest of the season.

"Chris was travelling home and lost control of his vehicle due to the slippery conditions caused by recent heavy rains and snow in his area," said the statement.

"The accident happened at approximately 9pm and it was not until 10.30pm that Chris was freed from the wreckage of his car by the emergency services. An operation was carried out soon after midnight."

Fulham managing director Fiddy revealed the full extent of Coleman's injuries but insisted he should make a full recovery.

"We have been informed that Chris has sustained a fracture of the right tibia and fibula and a fracture of the right ankle, for which he received surgery last night to realign and repair.

"He received no other injuries and his general condition is good. It is confirmed, however, that he will certainly miss the rest of the season.

"Chris is, as ever, in a composed state and despite the great trauma he has been through is showing great resilience.

"He is very grateful for the actions of all the emergency services whose prompt actions have prevented what could have been an even worsetcome from this very unfortunate accident.

"Having seen the pictures and heard the description of the accident, all at the club are relieved that Chris is well and in a position to make a full recovery.

"The chairman (Mohamed Al Fayed) has assured Chris that all will be done by the club to look after him during this difficult time and we all wish him well for a swift recovery."
