Thousands of Australian residents have been put on evacuation alert as rising temperatures and dangerous wind gusts pushed a fire storm closer to the national capital.

Thousands of Australian residents have been put on evacuation alert as rising temperatures and dangerous wind gusts pushed a fire storm closer to the national capital.

The flames have killed four people and razed 419 homes in Canberra in the last four days.

Officials warn even though 400 firefighters are battling the fires, no amount of preparation will be able to contain the flames if winds blow as hard as they did during the height of the crisis on Saturday.

Emergency Services Bureau executive director, Mike Castle, said: "If there was a repeat of bad weather no amount of containment lines would stop the fire."
