Fianna Fáil 'committed' to making minority Government work

Fianna Fáil leader Micheál Martin has said he and his party are committed to making a Fine Gael led minority Government work.

However, Mr Martin admitted that he would have no influence over what other parties or Independents would join in or sit on the Cabinet.

Micheál Martin has said Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael still have to work out the mechanics of electing a Taoiseach, and the ways that budgets and motions of no confidence would be voted on.

Negotiating teams from the two historically rival parties will meet again tomorrow morning.

Micheál Martin, has said an undertaking will be signed off on once it's agreed, but would still allow Fianna Fail to lead the Opposition: “We are not signing up to a program for Government, but we do accept that undertakings have to be given and we are entering into this in a very positive frame of mind.

“Because we have looked at what is happening across Europe and Canada and New Zealand and everywhere else where minority Governments have worked.

“And so we are committed to making that work.”
