The Green Party has proposed a 10-point strategy which it says will solve the current waste collection crisis in Galway.
Domestic and commercial waste has been building up there since the county's only landfill site closed last week.
The measures suggested by the party include the separate collection of wet organic and dry inorganic wastes, with the provision of locally-based composting compounds for the former and warehouses for the latter.
They also want the introduction of a weight-based system of charging which would provide an incentive for households to reduce the amount of waste presented for collection.
Green TD Trevor Sargent said his party's proposals were the only viable way to prevent authorities foisting unwanted dumps and incinerators on communities around the country.
