England footballing star David Beckham was taken to hospital in South Africa tonight with a suspected broken wrist.
The 28-year-old was clearly in pain after he tumbled early in the second half of England’s friendly match with South Africa in Durban.
He was substituted after 51 minutes by Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas.
The captain was taken by ambulance to hospital for x-rays.
It is understood that Beckham fractured his right scaphoid bone, which is located on the thumb side of his wrist, close to the lower arm bone.
Cameras caught Beckham leaving for the hospital shielding his face with his left hand.
After their 2-1 victory, England were scheduled to go straight to the airport, but doubts were raised as to whether Beckham would accompany his team.
But England manager Sven Goran Eriksson brushed off speculation saying: “He will be fit to travel, (the injury) is in the hand.
“No, no, he will travel with us,” he told Sky Sports.
“David Beckham has a problem with his wrist. He went to the hospital and they took x-rays.
“Our doctors thought it was better that they x-rayed at once.”
A spokesman for the South African Press Association said: “He has gone off to hospital with a suspected broken arm. That’s all we know.”
