Virgin delays superjumbo delivery

Virgin Atlantic Airways is delaying delivery of its new Airbus 380 superjumbos.

Virgin Atlantic Airways is delaying delivery of its new Airbus 380 superjumbos.

The airline will receive its first A380 jet in late 2007 instead of mid-2006, a spokeswoman said in London.

Delivery of the five other superjumbos Virgin has ordered will be spaced out over the following few years, she said.

The delay was partly due to concerns about whether Los Angeles Airport would be ready in time to accommodate the superjumbos, the spokeswoman said, citing the need to widen runways and taxiways.

She said Airbus had asked Virgin to give two years' notice of any design and layout requirements it had for the jet’s interior. She said that was a longer notice period than for other types of aircraft.
