Archipenko sprung a minor surprise as he saw off his short-priced stablemate Macarthur in the Derrinstown Stud Derby Trial at Leopardstown.

Aidan O’Brien fielded no less than four of the five runners with Macarthur, a full-brother to 2005 Vodafone Derby hero Motivator, being sent off the 8-11 favourite.

Macarthur had finished behind Mores Wells in the Ballysax Stakes last time and the pair took each other on again here.

After trying to make all on the market leader, Seamus Heffernan kicked clear turning into the straight but the distress signals were soon being sent out.

Mick Kinane manoeuvred Archipenko (8-1) into a challenging position and he soon had the race won.

The Ballydoyle third-string Yellowstone (10-1) made eye-catching progress from the rear to claim second, three-quarters of a length down at the line.

VC Bet reacted by removing Macarthur and Mores Wells from their Derby betting while slashing Archipenko to 14-1 from 40s.
