Community service and probation for Winona

Actress Winona Ryder was today ordered to carry out 480 hours community service for shoplifting from an exclusive department store.

Actress Winona Ryder was today ordered to carry out 480 hours community service for shoplifting from an exclusive department store.

The 31-year-old Hollywood star must carry out the work at several charitable foundations, including a hospital for the terminally ill and a charity which cares for babies with Aids.

Judge Elden Fox also sentenced her to three years supervised probation and ordered her to take part in a drug and psychological counselling programme.

Ryder was ordered to pay fines totalling $3,700 and $6,355.40 in compensation to Saks Fifth Avenue in Beverly Hills, the store from which she stole around £4,000 worth of designer merchandise and damaged other items.

Judge Fox warned Ryder that she would be jailed if she was caught shoplifting again.

He asked Ryder if she understood that to which she replied: “Yes.”

Judge Fox said he was concerned by the fact that Ryder was “unable or has refused to accept personal responsibility” for her actions on December 12 last year.

He added: “You have disappointed many people who have been entertained and inspired by your talent and acts of humanity for many years.”

Ryder showed no emotion as she was sentenced although earlier she displayed anger towards prosecutor Ann Rundle.

Ryder stood up at the court in Beverly Hills and looked angry as Ms Rundle accused her of “trotting out the body of a dead child” during mitigation from her lawyer Mark Geragos.

Mr Geragos had told the court about many years of work Ryder had carried out for a charitable foundation established by Marc Klass, whose daughter Polly was kidnapped and murdered.
