The Taliban have reportedly released the French journalist they had accused of spying.

Michel Peyrard had faced a possible death sentence if he'd been found guilty.

According to the Afghan Islamic Press, the Paris Match reporter was released in the city of Jalalabad.

He was arrested by Taliban officials on October 9 after he allegedly entered Afghanistan without legal documents and dressed in a burqa.

After his arrest, a Taliban spokesman said: "Spies are entering our sacred land as journalists and aid workers. This is an act against the internal and external security and sovereignty of an independent country. We will not accept the excuses of any country or organisation. Such people will be treated as spies."
