Savage needs incentive to be the best

Robbie Savage has admitted that any new contract offered him by Birmingham must be incentive-driven to get the best out of him.

Robbie Savage has admitted that any new contract offered him by Birmingham must be incentive-driven to get the best out of him.

The Welsh international – currently halfway through a two match suspension - is keen to commit himself to Blues for the remainder of his career.

But the former Leicester player wants targets built into any forthcoming deal to help keep him highly motivated and at the top of his game.

Savage, who has 15 months left of his present contract, told the Press Association: “I want to be the best player on the pitch every week and that keeps me going.

“That keeps my drive. I want to earn a new contract and get paid lots of money.

“But if I was to say that I’m going to sign a five-year contract with no goals in it, then that’s not me. I need a contract with goals.

“I need to play on Saturday with a goal at the end of it. The goal every Saturday is to be the best player on the pitch.

“If I’m not I go home disappointed although obviously the number one priority is for the team to get three points.”

Savage is realistic in terms of what goals Birmingham can achieve this season as the battle for the final Champions League spot and UEFA Cup places hots up.

He said: “Are we good enough for the Champions League? No, I don’t think we are. We’ll be happy with seventh or eighth. That would be a massive improvement on last season.

“The Champions League for me is out of the question. Realistically we are not good enough yet. But I think we are for the UEFA Cup.

“I got into Europe twice with Leicester but I think this squad is better.”
