Club comes first, insists Fowler
Manchester City striker Robbie Fowler insists an international recall is not his top priority at the moment as he tries to gather momentum at Maine Road.
The £6million striker scored his first goal for his new club in the 1-0 win over Birmingham on Sunday after failing to score in his first four starts for City.
Fowler has 26 England caps and seven goals to his name for his country, but insists his biggest concern is regular first-team football with his new club under former England boss Kevin Keegan.
“A lot of people have been asking about England and the 2004 European Championships but I am more concerned at getting myself right at club level first,” he told the club’s official website www.mcfc.co.uk.
“I want to get a good run of games together and be playing right at club level.
“I am not too interested in England at the moment – I want to concentrate on my football at Manchester City.”
Fowler admits the reaction of the City crowd to his first goal – a wonderful cushioned volley which gave Birmingham goalkeeper Ian Bennett no chance – has acted as a spur to him.
“I have heard in the past how good the Manchester City fans are. They have come from the Second Division to the Premiership and the support has always been fantastic.
“I witnessed it on Sunday after I scored. My family were in the Main Stand and they said they could feel the atmosphere when I scored. They said that it was incredible and it was a great feeling for me to get that first goal.”
