A Dutch husband allegedly phoned his wife to say he'd been kidnapped when he was actually with his mistress.

A Dutch husband allegedly phoned his wife to say he'd been kidnapped when he was actually with his mistress.

Police say the 60-year-old from Rotterdam called her from a mobile on Christmas Eve.

Police launched a search and found him on Christmas Day - with his mistress.

"The man decided to spend Christmas with his lady friend instead of with his wife, and thought up a plan neither his wife nor the police appreciated," police said in a statement.

They're planning to file a civil action against the man for wasting police time, according to reports.

They're also considering whether they can charge him with a criminal offence.
