British Army bomb experts tonight carried out controlled explosions on a device left on a bus in west Belfast by masked men.

The explosives, which had been packed into a sports bag, was left on the vehicle by two men, who ordered the driver to take it to Woodbourne Police Station.

The driver stopped the bus at the junction of the Stewartstown Road and Black’s Road. Police closed the road and evacuated nearby houses as the device was dealt with.

The security alert lasted for around four hours and the road has now been reopened.

Forensic experts have taken away the device for examination.

Police at Woodbourne have appealed to anyone who witnessed the incident at around 4.45pm on the Stewartstown Road to contact them.
