Cabinet to agree wording on same-sex marriage referendum

The wording of the referendum on same-sex marriage is due to be agreed today.

The Cabinet is holding a special meeting to approve the text, which will be published later in the week.

Sources on both the Fine Gael and Labour sides insist that they are determined to make sure the referendum on marriage rights for same-sex couples is passed with flying colours.

That is why a special Cabinet meeting is being held this morning to focus on the wording of the referendum - the exact text that the public will be asked to put into the Constitution - so that couples of the same sex can get married.

Assuming it is approved today, the wording should be published by the end of the week.

Meanwhile, the Government has again confirmed that it plans to give gay couples the right to adopt children, and to provide for legal recognition between a person's biological children and their own same-sex partner, before the referendum is held.

A spokeswoman has confirmed that the long-awaited Child and Family Relatoinships Bill will be before the Dáil next month, and passed before the public goes to the polls on whether same-sex couples should have the right to marry.
