Missing intern: Police remove items from congressman's home

Police are analysing items removed from a US Congressman's apartment for clues about the disappearance of a former federal intern.

Several items from Gary Condit's home have been sent to the FBI crime lab in Virginia.

Chandra Levy, 24, has not been seen since April 30. The disappearance is being treated as a missing person case and police have repeatedly said Mr Condit is not a suspect.

Washington Police chief Charles Ramsey said he did not know whether the evidence police took from Mr Condit's apartment contained anything that might help them discover what happened to Ms Levy.

Ms Levy, of Modesto, California, was an intern at the federal Bureau of Prisons. Police searched her apartment and found nothing missing but her keys.

Mr Condit, 53 and married, told police last week that he had an affair with Ms Levy. His staff had claimed for weeks that they were just goods friends.

Meanwhile, according to reports, FBI agents have interviewed a Pentecostal minister who described an affair between his then 18-year-old daughter and Mr Condit.

The minister, Otis Thomas, was quoted as saying Mr Condit had told his daughter never to speak of the relationship.

Mr Thomas said his daughter is afraid to talk to the FBI and has gone into hiding. Mr Thomas, whose church is in Modesto, did gardening work at the Levy home in Modesto.

Marina Ein, a spokeswoman for Mr Condit, said the reports were "discountable." Asked if she was denying the congressman had an affair with the woman, Ms Ein said: "We're not going to get in the territory of accounting for each and every one of the tabloid cases that are presented."
