Court charges pair with INLA membership
The Special Criminal Court has tonight remanded in custody two Co Louth men who were charged with being members of the INLA.
Before the three-judge court this evening was Paul Kelly (aged 44) with an address at Cedarwood Park, Coxs Demense, Dundalk Co Louth and Anthony Lee (aged 31) Carnbeg, Doylesfort Road also of Dundalk, Co Louth.
Both men were charged with membership of an illegal organisation styling itself the Irish National Liberation Army otherwise known as the INLA, within the state on December 20 last, contrary to the Offences against the State Act.
The three-judge court, with Mr Justice Paul Butler presiding, heard that both men were charged with the offences at 4pm this afternoon.
The court was told by members of the Gardaí that following the men’s arrest, neither man made any reply after the charge was put to them.
During the brief hearing, both men spoke only to confirm their identities after the charges were read out to the court.
The court agreed to remand both men in custody until Monday morning, Christmas Eve.
The court remanded Lee on consent to bail of €20,000 independent surety, that he surrender his passport, sign on at a named garda station twice a week, and that he reside at the family home address and remain indoors between 10pm and 7am.
Counsel for the DPP indicated to the court that they may object to Kelly being granted bail.
