Labour seeks Govt moves to combat potential flu outbreak

Labour Party TD Liz McManus has called on the Government to immediately take measures to combat a potential flu pandemic.

Labour Party TD Liz McManus has called on the Government to immediately take measures to combat a potential flu pandemic.

Reports this morning said the Department of Health had made no arrangements to buy drugs to fight an outbreak of the virus, unlike most of its European counterparts.

The department has reportedly blamed a lack of co-operation from hospital consultants, but Ms McManus said today that this was no excuse for the lack of preparations.

Ms McManus said: "It's difficult if there isn't full co-operation, but I would certainly be urging the minister to make preparations to protect public health and to ensure that if there is a risk, that risk is absolutely brought to a minimum."
