Local council blocks plan to name Tullamore bridge after Fiona Pender

An attempt to have a footbridge over the Grand Canal in Tullamore in Co Offaly named after missing Fiona Pender has been blocked by the local town council.

Thirteen thousand people signed a petition calling for the bridge to be called 'Fiona's Way' in memory of the 25-year-old hairdresser who went missing in August 1996.

She was seven months pregnant at the time.

The town council has, however, voted against reviewing its policy of not naming new infrastructure after individuals.
