A Ukrainian passenger plane carrying 74 people, most of them Spanish military personnel serving in Afghanistan, crashed early today in north west Turkey, Turkish news reports said.

All 74 people aboard the crashed plane are dead, CNN-Turk television has reported.

The plane went down near the mountain town of Macka, about 30 miles south of the Black Sea port of Trabzon, where the plane had been due to make a refuelling stop, NTV television said.

The plane was flying from Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan, to Zaragoza, in Spain, NTV reported.

It carried 62 passengers – all Spanish peacekeeping forces who had been serving in Afghanistan – and 12 crew members, the television station said.

An eyewitness said he saw at least two charred bodies in the flaming wreckage of the plane, private Kanal 7 television reported.
