A viable pipe bomb was discovered outside a house in the North today.

Following a telephone warning, Fairyknowe Park in Newtownabbey, Co Antrim, was cordoned off shortly after midnight and an Army bomb disposal team called in.

The device was removed from the front garden of a house in the street, on the outskirts of Belfast, for examination.

A PSNI spokeswoman said a motive for the attack on the property had yet to be established.

She appealed for anyone with information or who witnessed any suspicious activity around the area to contact the PSNI.
