Witnesses describe McVeigh execution

Timothy McVeigh was calm throughout his execution, according to a prisons spokesman.

He co-operated during the time he was restrained in the holding cell to the time he walked to the execution chamber.

The spokesman said the intravenous drip, containing the lethal chemicals, was placed in McVeigh's right leg.

The first drug was given at 13.10 Irish time, with the second being given at 13.11. The final one was given at 13.13 and McVeigh was pronounced dead at 13.14 Irish time.

He said the Oklahoma bomber made eye contact and nodded to supporters, media and government officials. He also looked towards the room where the victims' families were.

McVeigh's skin went pale towards the end and his body became rigid, said Susan Carlson, another media witness. She said McVeigh had a "sense of pride, like he was resigned to his fate".

Linda Cavanaugh, of KFOR-TV in Oklahoma, said McVeigh was paler than she remembered him during his trial. She also said he did not have the same look of arrogance. She said his head was shaven and he had to strain his neck to look at the media.

Survivors of the Oklahoma bombing took solace in the death of McVeigh six years after he bombed the Alfred P Murrah Federal Building, killing 168 people and injuring 850.

Janice Smith, whose 46-year-old brother, Lanny Scroggins, died in the bombing, prayed with her children at the Oklahoma City National Memorial, then left after getting word that McVeigh was dead.

"It's over," she said. "We don't have to continue with him any more."
