A coastal community is in shock after three members of the same family were killed when they were hit by a car as they walked through a village.

The woman holidaymaker and her son and daughter died in the accident in Gairloch, Wester Ross, yesterday afternoon.

They were named as Shirley Braithwaite, 51, of Barnsley, South Yorkshire, and her daughter Natalie, 22, and son Matthew, 19.

Mrs Braithwaite and her daughter died at the scene. Matthew was taken by air ambulance to Raigmore Hospital in Inverness with serious injuries but died later, police said.

The incident happened as many people were returning home from work and the village was busy with holidaymakers.

Flowers were being left at the side of the road today as the community came to terms with what had happened.

The tragedy took place across the road from Wildcat Store, a general shop on the main road in the village.

Shop assistant Penny McGillivray, 27, said the community was in shock over the deaths.

"I think it has left a lot of people very shocked, everyone is talking about it, saying what a terrible thing," she said.
