Readers of the long-awaited sequel to To Kill a Mockingbird, which comes out tomorrow, are in for a surprise in the shape of the changing views of Atticus Finch.

A review of Harper Lee's novel Go Set a Watchman has revealed the main character Finch is portrayed as a racist bigot in his later life, who opposes the Supreme Court’s efforts to impose integrated education and equal voting rights in the south.

In the original 1960 novel, lawyer Finch defends a black man wrongly accused of rape in the American Deep South.
