Friday's TV Tips

SPORT: Thank GAA It’s Friday (RTÉ Two, 8.30pm)

This week's show features Dublin hurler and firefighter, Michael Carton and Limerick’s David Breen, a physiotherapist working at the renowned Sports Surgery Clinic (SSC) in Santry.

When he’s not playing hurling for Dublin, Michael Carton is a firefighter based in Coolmine Fire Station. It isn’t easy to combine hurling and firefighting, but Michael has managed to juggle both.

The show also attended a recent auction by Fonsie Mealy of collectibles and sporting memorabilia. The most sought-after item up for sale was one of Nicky Rackard’s All-Ireland medals.

Limerick’s David Breen is a physiotherapist working at the renowned Sports Surgery Clinic (SSC) in Santry. He spent much of this season on the rehab table himself. We see David working on patients at SSC, using state-of-the-art facilities and techniques to return them to full health.

FILM: Bridesmaids (Film 4, 9pm)

A disorganised and down-on-her-luck woman is thrilled when her best friend announces she’s getting married, and asks her to be the maid of honour.

However, organising a bridal shower to remember will be tricky – especially since one of the bridesmaids is the wife of the groom’s boss, who really splashes cash.

The fellow bridesmaids can only witness the fallout as the chalk-and-cheese pair vie for the blushing bride’s affections.

Paul Feig’s raucous comedy of errors – a feminist take on The Hangover – turned out to be one of the most engaging feelgood romcoms of recent years.

Kristen Wiig and Annie Mumolo’s script is bursting with great lines and is anchored by winning performances from a talented ensemble cast, who throw vanity to the wind and humiliates themselves for our delight.

TALK SHOW: Alan Carr: Chatty Man Summer Special (Channel 4, 9pm)

Friday evenings have been rather quiet without Alan Carr, actually.

However, we have to contain ourselves from getting too excited, alas tonight’s programme is his one-off summer special (albeit split into two parts and stretched out across the full night).

Tonight, as usual, Carr’s not scrimping on his guests – he’s lined up the hilarious Miranda Hart, who’ll be getting comfy on the sofa to chat about her latest stand-up arena tour, while Vin Diesel drops by to plug his film, Guardians of the Galaxy.

Meanwhile, the Inbetweeners stars James Buckley, Simon Bird, Blake Harrison and Joe Thomas have taken time out of their busy schedule to discuss the second film in the franchise.

And music comes courtesy of Rizzle Kicks, who perform their latest single Tell Her.

DOCUMENTARY: Northern Soul: Living for the Weekend (BBC4, 9.30pm)

This is a one-off documentary following the rise of music and dance movement Northern Soul throughout the decade of the 1970s, explaining how it was a unique and peculiar genre of music – and it all began with DJ Russ Winstanley and the Wigan Casino.

This was a time when rare American soul tunes and their heavy beats were sought after by obsessive DJs from northern British towns; a time that influenced fashions as much as it did dance moves.

While using archive footage and vivid first-hand accounts, the programme also hears from Northern Soul DJs Ian Levine, Kev Roberts, Ian Dewhirst, Richard Searling and Colin Curtis.

Plus, the likes of author Bob Stanley, Radio 2 DJ Tony Blackburn and DJ and producer Pete Waterman offer their thoughts and memories.

COMEDY: Callan’s Kicks (RTÉ One, 9.35pm)

Following the success of his New Year’s Eve special, Oliver Callan and his gang are back for a full series of Callan’s Kicks.

The six-part weekly comedy sketch show will chart the events of the moment through mimicry and satire aimed at a broad audience, sending up Ireland’s world of celebrity, media culture, sports stars and politicians.

Callan’s highly topical brand of parody has been a feature of RTÉ Radio One for three years with an experienced team of writers and other talented impressionists alongside him.

FILM: In the Electric Mist (BBC2, 11.05pm)

Louisiana detective Dave Robicheaux (Tommy Lee Jones) is investigating the murder of a young woman when he encounters Hollywood stars Elrod Sykes (Peter Sarsgaard) and his girlfriend Kelly Drummond (Kelly Macdonald), in the small town to make a Civil War film.

Dave believes Elrod is driving under the influence and decides to arrest him. However, things take a strange turn when Elrod tells Dave of a decaying corpse that he and Kelly found in the swamp.

It didn’t receive much of a roll-out, and seemed to disappear like a body in a swamp when it was released – but this Bertrand Tavernier’s atmospheric thriller is a creepily effective piece which will stay with you long after the closing credits have rolled.

Worth staying up for.
