Cork needed extra-time to knock UCC out of this season's Waterford Crystal Cup, with a penalty from goalkeeper Anthony Nash handing the Rebels a 3-17 to 1-22 quarter-final win.

At Pairc Ui Rinn, the Cork starting line-up included ten senior debutants - four of them minors from last year, and four more who played in last year's All-Ireland intermediate final.

Brian Harnett's 17th-minute goal helped Cork take a 1-5 to 0-4 lead, but UCC took over for the remainder of the first half. Kevin Keehan tallied up 1-3 and Shane Burke and Dean Brosnan also chipped in with some excellent scores.

Conor Lehane scored four frees for Cork in the opening period, at the end of which UCC led by 1-11 to 1-6.

UCC kept knocking over scores in the second half, despite conceding a succession of pointed frees from Jamie Coughlan and a second goal from the pacy Hartnett.

It was a Coughlan free which made it 2-14 to 1-17 at the end of normal time. The college side continued to look the more likely winners, until Cian McCarthy was fouled for a penalty at the end of the second period of extra-time. Nash did the necessary and shot Cork into next weekend's semi-finals

14-man Waterford pulled through in today's other quarter-final, opening their title defence with a 1-12 to 0-11 victory over Cork IT.

Patrick O'Connor and Ryan Clifford scored 0-3 apiece as the Cork students moved into a 0-9 to 0-3 half-time lead at Walsh Park. Tony Murphy was the chief attacking threat for the visitors and he caused his marker Chris Ryan plenty of problems.

Waterford were missing a number of their frontliners, including the De La Salle contingent, but Declan Prendergast and Liam Lawlor were available, along with Michael 'Brick' Walsh who was back from his honeymoon.

It took the Deise 28 minutes to register their first point from play from Seamus Prendergast, and Richie Foley, who went on to play a crucial role for the hosts, kicked a goal-scoring chance wide.

But Davy Fitzgerald's men went on to dominate the second half with Foley striking over some well-taken frees. The centre-forward added a goal to his haul, flighting a 21-yard free low to the net past goalkeeper Tommy Quaid.

Foley finished with 1-8 in all as Waterford, who lost Maurice Shanahan to a red card, set up a semi-final clash with Clare at Sixmilebridge next Sunday.
