Defeat leaves Daly pondering his future with Dublin

Today's 13-point All-Ireland SHC quarter-final defeat at the hands of Tipperary could well prove to be Anthony Daly's last game in charge of the Dublin hurlers.

The Dubs' Championship challenge is over for another year after John O'Dwyer's second half brace of goals steered Tipp to a 2-23 to 0-16 victory in rain-soaked Thurles.

The Semple Stadium reversal comes on the back of a 12-point loss to Kilkenny in the recent Leinster final and speculation is mounting that Daly may call it quits after six years at Dublin's helm.

"I came here to win an All-Ireland quarter-final today. There's plenty of time over the next couple of weeks to ponder the future," he told RTÉ in the aftermath.

"You don't think about that (deciding on your managerial future) coming into a game like this. You're just totally focused on trying to get a result, and you're not in a proper position to make that call.

"But look, maybe it is time to let someone else at it. We'll see over the next couple of weeks. (I'll) have a few chats with a few people, and see what way it goes."

The Clare man, who guided Dublin to Allianz League and Leinster Championship glory in 2011 and 2013 respectively, was understandably disappointed with the way his side's current campaign finished out.

"It has looked promising after we won the relegation play-off (in this year's league) and beaten Wexford in the (Leinster) Championship...it looked like we might kick on.

"But, unfortunately, we've lost out heavily to both Kilkenny and Tipperary in our last two games. You can't hide from it, we were beaten and that's the bottom line."

Meanwhile, resurgent Tipperary have now scored 12-89 in their four Championship outing this summer and will be licking their lips at the prospect of taking on Munster champions Cork at Croke Park on August 17.

Their manager Eamon O'Shea is calling for further improvements ahead of that crunch All-Ireland semi-final, knowing that a repeat performance will not be good enough against the Rebels.

"It wasn't Dublin's most vintage performance and it wasn't ours either. I'm just happy to get through the game," O'Shea remarked afterwards.

"It's a cliché but we have a lot of improving to do before the Cork game now. It's a good day but from my point of view, there's a lot of work to be done."

The Tipp boss added: "I'm very pleased to be in an All-Ireland semi-final. The team is a very seasoned team with a lot to prove. Maybe it's a good way to go into an All-Ireland semi-final when you haven't played your best.

"I'm not trying to down-play it in terms of where we're at. Anyone can see out there, with a hurling brain, that we have to improve to compete. But we're still there, we're still standing."

Defenders Conor O'Mahony (back) and Michael Cahill (knee) missed this afternoon's quarter-final due to injury, but O'Shea is hopeful that the duo will be back in contention to face Cork.
