Lyng to continue as Wexford captain
Wing forward Diarmuid Lyng has been confirmed as the Wexford hurlers' captain for their fast-approaching Championship campaign.
The 28-year-old skippered the side last year and also led from the front as his seven-point haul helped Wexford to victory in Sunday's Allianz NHL Division 2 final against Clare.
From the St Martin's club in Piercestown, Lyng made his debut for Wexford in the 2004 All-Ireland SHC semi-final against Cork and settled into the starting line-up the following year.
Better known as 'Gizzy', he had made progress with the Model county's minors before playing his part in back-to-back Leinster title triumphs for the U-21s in 2001 and 2002.
Lyng, whose brother Ciaran plays for the Wexford footballers, is a primary school teacher by profession.
Lyng and company have a tough Leinster Championship opener in the offing, with Galway, the recently-crowned Allianz NHL Division 1 champions, providing the opposition at Nowlan Park on May 29.
