Warnock in the frame for Palace job

Crystal Palace are closing in on their new manager and are considering a stunning return for Neil Warnock.

Press Association Sport understands only Warnock and former West Brom boss Steve Clarke are in the frame for the Selhurst Park job.

Palace are looking to appoint before their Barclays Premier League trip to Newcastle on Saturday.

Warnock joined QPR from Palace in 2010 after a two-and-a-half-year spell but the 65-year-old has not managed since leaving Leeds in 2013.

Clarke has been out of work after being sacked by West Brom last December.

Palace have been managerless since Tony Pulis left two weeks ago, with Keith Millen in caretaker charge.

Malky Mackay was poised to be appointed before details of offensive texts he sent while at Cardiff were made public.

Defender Brede Hangeland has called for an end to the uncertainty at the club.

“It is important to sort the situation out as soon as possible and move forward,” the 33-year-old told Press Association Sport.

“I am sure when a new manager comes in he will be keen to put his stamp on the team and the sooner the better.

“It’s also important to find the right man, we just have to trust them in the process.

“Tony Pulis was massive for Palace last year, he came in and turned things around. It was a big blow to us all to see him go and I was keen to work with him.

“But there’s a lot of good things in the squad, all the players worked so hard last season so a lot of the stuff is in place.”

Hangeland played the second half of Palace’s 3-0 Capital One Cup stroll at Walsall on Tuesday, their first win of the season after two defeats, and believes Millen has kept them settled.

“Keith is telling us to keep the same style of play and the tactics going so I don’t think it’s changed that much,” said the former Fulham captain.

“Everyone is quite keen to find out what is going to happen. We’re in a bit of an uncertain period at the moment but that’s the way it is. We have to be professional and see what happens.”
