Tohill unveiled as new International Rules manager
Anthony Tohill has been revealed as the new Ireland International Rules manager at a press conference in Croke Park this afternoon.
A selector in 2006 and 2008, Tohill succeeds Sean Boylan as manager and will now begin the hunt to fill his panel ahead of a two-test series in October.
The 38-year old is a former player with Derry, and picked up an All-Ireland Senior title with the Oak-leafers in 1993. Tohill also won two Ulster Senior football Championships, four NFL titles and four All-Stars.
Tohill also has plenty of International Rules experience under his belt, and was involved as a player when the series was revived in 1998 and in 2001 he captained Ireland in their victorious tour of Australia.
Former Ireland International Rules manager Brian McEniff believes Tohill is well suited to his new managerial role.
"He was actually a perfect leader for Ireland. His big thing was definitely his presence among the players," he said.
"I remember before one of the tests him pulling the players together a giving a really impressive speech and the players running two feet taller after it.
"That's what I'd expect from him as manager."
Tohill is also a former Aussie Rules trialist and spent some time as a rookie with AFL club the Melbourne Demons in 1991.
Ireland will face Australia in a two-test series this Autumn, with Limerick's Gaelic Grounds hosting the first test on October 23, while Croke Park will host the second test on October 30.
