Police in New Zealand say four officers have been shot during a siege near the remote Island town of Kawerau.

Police in New Zealand say four officers have been shot during a siege near the remote Island town of Kawerau.

It is understood the incident happened before 11am local time at a rural property when police say shots were heard by officers who were in the area, on an operation involving an aircraft.

The area was cordoned off and the Armed Offenders Squad was deployed.

Four of its officers were shot, police say two are in stable condition and a third is in a serious condition in hospital.

A fourth officer also received a gunshot in a separate incident at the scene. He is currently receiving medical treatment.

The area remains sealed off and a no-fly zone is in place.
