Diageo has announced it is investing €30 million in Dublin's iconic St James’s Gate Brewery for brewing their non-alcoholic beverage Guinness 0.0.
Senator Catherine Ardagh and Tánaiste Micheál Martin were on a site visit to St James’s Gate this week and were updated on the work being done to bring the historic Rupert Guinness Theatre in the Liberties back to community use and the redevelopmennt of the St James’s Gate brewery into a new urban quarter.
Senator Ardagh said: “I was delighted to be joined by the Tánaiste this week on a visit to the St James’s Gate Brewery.
“During our visit, we were briefed on the significant new investment of €30 million being made into the St James’s Gate Brewery to double the production capacity of Guinness 0.0.
“This investment brings the Guinness 0.0 production capacity at St. James’s Gate to 176 million pints of Guinness 0.0 a year, almost doubling capacity from 2023. This increased investment in such an important location in the heart of the South Inner City is hugely welcome.
“I was also briefed on the discussions between Diageo, Dublin City Council and the Department of Tourism about working together to return the currently vacant Rupert Guinness Theatre back to community use in Dublin 8.
“The Theatre has been vacant for too long. Dublin 8 needs more community spaces and if this historic Theatre is successfully returned to use it would be hugely positive for the entire South Inner City.”
Tánaiste Micheál Martin said: “The significant new investment announced by Diageo is a welcome boost to the area surrounding St James’s Gate, and it follows increased demand for non-alcoholic beer, as more and more consumers move towards moderation.
“Additionally, the efforts to return the Rupert Guinness Theatre to community use are hugely welcome, as it is important that the Liberties, and indeed the wider locality of the South Inner City, have the community spaces they require."
