The MTV European Music Awards 2020 (EMAs) are fast approaching, and this year Little Mix are hosting.

The band follows in the footsteps of Katy Perry, Selena Gomez and Ed Sheeran, and the event will be star-studded despite looking a bit different to normal. Instead of being filmed in an arena with hordes of guests, the show will comprise filmed performances from different locations. Dua Lipa, BTS and Justin Bieber all have multiple nominations, and Alicia Keys and Sam Smith are set to perform.

The EMAs are no stranger to drama – in the past the show has seen Kanye West crashing the stage, technical difficulties during a Beyoncé performance and streakers – as well as some seriously outrageous fashion. As we look forward to this year, these are some of the most OTT outfits to grace the EMAs in the past..

1. Missy Elliott

Missy Elliott wore this orange creation in 1997: a much simpler time. With a giant collar, even bigger cuffs and matching orange crocodile pattern trousers and coat, the outfit is incredibly silly and a whole lot of fun.

2. The Spice Girls

The year 2000 was obviously when the Spice Girls had their leather phase. Sporting tight leather outfits in black and red, we can’t imagine this was the most comfortable of events for them.

3. Christina Aguilera

And who can forget when Christina Aguilera spent a year or so solely wearing leather chaps? Paired with a skimpy crochet bodysuit, this was one racy outfit.

4. Pink

Everything about this photo screams Noughties. In 2002, Pink took to the stage wearing an all-white outfit of cargo pants and a top made out of interlaced ribbons that doesn’t look structurally sound.

5. Beyoncé

It’s rare to see Beyoncé make a sartorial misstep, but we all made mistakes in 2003. This sparkly silver outfit was basically a glorified bikini with spangly straps attached.

6. Madonna

Back in 2005, Madonna opted to pair her purple bodysuit and fishnet tights with… a matching bomber jacket? As an outfit, we’re not sure it entirely made sense – it’s giving us real Flashdance vibes.

7. Katy Perry

As host of the EMAs in 2008, Katy Perry went through a whole range of outfit changes. This was definitely one of the more peculiar options, with the singer wearing a corset dress that featured a colourful merry-go-round as the skirt.

8. Shakira

With sparkly tassels on her trousers and wristbands, Shakira’s 2010 outfit is basically the pants version of what Beyoncé wore in 2003.

9. Lady Gaga

Yes, that is Lady Gaga performing in 2011, on what looks to be a replica of the moon, wearing a giant red 3D dress. You can’t ever accuse her of phoning in her fashion choices.

10. Nicki Minaj

The award for longest train definitely goes to Nicki Minaj in 2014, whose skirt trailed on the ground while she was suspended in mid-air.

11. Rita Ora

While most celebs spend a lot of time and effort getting dressed up for the EMAs red carpet, in 2017 Rita Ora decided to turn this on its head. She rocked up in a classic white bathrobe, complete with a towel on her head and some pretty luxe jewellery.
