A full-time carer from Co Kildare and a TikToker from Co Donegal are two of over 450 contestants taking part in the new Netflix series Squid Game: The Challenge.

The series is a spin-off of the original Squid Game, a South Korean thriller in which 456 players play a number of children's games in the hopes of winning a major cash prize.

The original series was released on Netflix in September 2021 and became one of the most viewed shows on the streaming platform.

Squid Game: The Challenge follows the format of the fictional series, pitting 456 people against each other in a series of physical and mental challenges until only one winner remains.

Among the players is Kildare man Mikie Bowe (35), who is a full-time carer.

Bowe lives in Belfast with his five children, four of whom have special needs, and said countless trips to Disneyland are on the line, so he's playing to win.

The second Irish contestant is content creator Eric Roberts (32) from Downings, Co Donegal.

He said he's most excited to play the final game, however, he's terrified of heights, so let's hope that doesn't get in his way.

The series will be put out in three batches, the first of which saw the first five episodes released on Netflix on Wednesday.

Four further episodes will drop on November 29th, before the final episode on December 6th.
