Mr Filan passed away earlier today at St Vincent’s Private Hospital in Dublin. His death comes less than a year after Shane and his family lost their beloved mum Mae in December last year.
The father of seven was well-known throughout Sligo where the family ran the famous Carlton Café on Castle Street.
Peter was originally from Castleplunkett in Roscommon.
However, he moved to Sligo and along with Mae, the couple had seven children including Finbarr, Peter, Yvonne, Liam, Denis, Mairead and Shane.
He also had 22 cherished grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Tom, sister Margaret, sons-in-law Michael, Rowan and Cathal, daughters-in-law Geraldine, Ciara, Patricia and Gillian nephews, nieces, relatives, neighbours and friends.
Mr Filan was being cared for at the Hawthorn Unit at St Vincent's Hospital where his family said he received exceptional care.
His funeral details have not yet been released.
