A man also aged in his 50s was subsequently arrested by airport police a short time later. Under the Air Navigation Transport Act, airport police have the power to stop, search and detain any person or vehicle on airport property.

A person working in the Terminal, who did not want to be named said: “Mayhem broke out outside the Terminal where I work. The man, who is a non-national, began attempting to allegedly stab people all around him.

“He unfortunately got one older man and kept allegedly stabbing him. It was so very strange and those travelling and us working inside were very frightened. There were airport police everywhere.

“They (airport police) closed down the road out of Terminal One while the incident was taking place. It was extremely nerve wracking."
