The national weather agency said heavy rain will be coupled with strong and gusty winds in Clare, Donegal, Galway, Leitrim, Mayo and Sligo.

There is a risk of localised flooding, damage to temporary structures, difficult travelling conditions and poor visibility, forecasters said.

The status-yellow warning is in place for 24 hours from 1pm on Sunday.

Elsewhere it should stay mainly dry on Sunday apart from some patchy drizzle, Met Éireann said, with highest temperatures reaching 20 degrees.

Rain will continue in the west on Sunday night with the ongoing risk of local flooding, with temperatures dropping to 14 degrees in strong and gusty winds.

Persistent, and at times heavy, rain will move eastwards during bank holiday Monday with the clearance following from the west in the afternoon. Temperatures will peak at 18 to 22 degrees, according to Met Éireann.
