To date, four men have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Two of these men have been charged and appeared before the Criminal Courts of Justice.

Gardaí said that as the matter is currently before the courts, they could not release any further information.

After gardaí confirmed his death, Taoiseach Simon Harris told the Dáil: “I want to join you in expressing my sympathy to the family.

“That’s a heart-breaking situation. That’s an extraordinarily devasting situation for the family.”

Aontú leader Peadar Toibín said: “Our deepest sympathies go out to his family.

“It points to a very, very serious issue that on the main street of our capital city is a dangerous and violent place on a regular basis for so many people.

“It’s not just the main street of our capital city, it’s towns and villages across the country that people do not feel safe. And it’s not happening by accident.

“It’s happening because we have the lowest number of gardaí regarding per capita.”
